Chipmakers Nvidia and AMD say the US has blocked them from exporting some of their most sophisticated pieces of AI technology to some countries in the Middle East. U.S. officials had already set curbs on exports of the companies' chips to China over national security concerns last year. However, after Nvidia mentioned the wider ban in a filing this week it was not immediately clear what risks were posed by exports to the Middle East, and the U.S. Commerce Department did not return a request for comment. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters Nvidia rival AMD also received an informed letter with similar restrictions. Nvidia derives the majority of its sales from the United States, China and Taiwan, and does not provide a revenue breakdown from the Middle East. The company said the new restrictions, which apply to advanced chips designed to speed up machine-learning tasks, would not have a quote “immediate material impact” on their results. Nvidia did not specify which countries in the Middle East would be included in the new curbs. Last September, Nvidia and AMD said they received new licensing requirements from the U.S. that would halt AI chips bound for China. Both companies as well as Intel have since disclosed plans to create less powerful chips to sell to China. Those all came as tensions boiled over on Taiwan, where Nvidia's chips are manufactured as well as the chips of nearly every other major firm that makes them. The Biden administration went a step further last October when it published a sweeping set of export controls, including a measure to cut off China from certain semiconductor chips made anywhere in the world with U.S. equipment. Japan and the Netherlands followed up with similar rules earlier this year. The move effectively limits the ability of Chinese organizations to carry out many advanced computing operations, like image and speech recognition, useful for smartphones but also for military applications like parsing satellite imagery or communications online for intelligence, expanding Washington's attempts to slow Beijing's technological and military advances.
