* many people of my age and older  : 내 또래 또는 나보나 나이 많은 사람들

that is not wholly so = that is not the case 100%(전적으로) 그런 것은 아니다

to my last gasp : 죽는 날까지 (gasp =  숨) = forever = for good = till the day I die

* formative years 사춘기

* though: 물론

speak against their governments : 반정부 발언

* speak for : 찬성 or 대신 (speak for me 나대신)

* include : 포함하다 => ~ 중에

Visitors to our offices included those  : 방문자 중에 이런 사람도 있어요

I have five cars. They include 2~3

I have five cars, including ~~

# So given a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two. Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.

given a Time Turner : ~가 주어진다면

acquisition : 내 것이 된 것

many people of my age and older  : 내 또래 또는 나보나 나이 많은 사람들

* vicissitudes = challenges

# Now you might think that I chose my second theme, the importance of imagination, because of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so. Though I personally will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp, I have learned to value imagination in a much broader sense. Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. (But also) In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared.

* Now : 문장 톤이 바뀜 = 그런데, 한편

that is not wholly so = that is not the case 100%(전적으로) 그런 것은 아니다

to my last gasp : 죽는 날까지 (gasp =  숨) = forever = for good = till the day I die

* envision = picture = imagine 머릿속에 그려보다

* that which = what

* fount = source 출발점

* arguably 분명히 (이론/반론이 있을 수 있지만, 제 생각에는(=definetly)

*revelatory : 기존에 모르던 것을 드러내주는

revelatory
adjective
   formalUK  /ˌrev.əˈleɪ.tər.i/ US  /ˈrev.ə.lə.tɔːr.i/
making something known or showing something that was previously secret:
It was a revelatory moment when I realized that there were other people who watched the show.

kind 배려, 공감, 신경 ===== sensitive, considerate, sympathetic ========> empathetic

empathise with

# One of the greatest formative experiences of my life preceded Harry Potter, though it informed much of what I subsequently wrote in those books. This revelation came in the form of one of my earliest day jobs. Though I was sloping off to write stories during my lunch hours, I paid the rent in my early 20s by working at the African research department at Amnesty International’s headquarters in London.

formative years 사춘기

* procede = came before <-> follow = came after

though: 물론

* inform : 영향을 주다 = affect

*slop off = slip away

* Amnesty International :

working at the African research department  : 보통 직장은 work for이지만, at을 쓴 이유는 장소를 강조(내가 일했던 곳은 다름아닌 ~)

# There in my little office I read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them. I saw photographs of those who had disappeared without trace, sent to Amnesty by their desperate families and friends. I read the testimony of torture victims and saw pictures of their injuries. I opened handwritten, eye witness accounts of summary trials and executions, of kidnappings and rapes.

* hastily scribbled letters : 급하게 갈겨 쓴

* smuggle 밀수 => 몰래 가지고 나오다

* totalitarian : 전체주의 = 독재

* regime (불법적인 느낌) 정권 <-> government (민주적으로 선출된) 정부

their desperate families and friends : desperate
