* as good as it gets

as poor as it is possible to be = as poor as it gets : 이정도 가능한 정도까지 가난하다 => 이보다 더 가난할 수는 없다

* come to pass 실현되다

greatest 위대한X => 가장 커다란 (very good, very big)

* for all = with all = despite : ~에도 불구하고

# Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it. So I think it fair to say that by any conventional measure, a mere seven years after my graduation day, I had failed (상태) on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless. The fears that my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both come to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.

Ultimately 결국, 언젠가는 = in the end

* constitute 구성하다 = make up

criteria = standard

if you let it (give you a set of criteria)

* fair 공평한X => 정당한, 올바른 (무리 없다)

* conventional = traditional, usual

very large and impressive

He had produced a meal of epic proportions.

as poor as it is possible to be = as poor as it gets : 이정도 가능한 정도까지 가난하다 => 이보다 더 가난할 수는 없다

as good as it gets

* come to pass 실현되다

come to passliterary to happen after a period of time

It came to pass that they had a son.

# Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of fairy tale resolution. I had no idea then how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality.

the press 언론

a kind of = something like ~ 인 것, ~ 와 같은 것

the tunnel : 인생의 터널

# So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping-away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena (I believed) I truly belonged (to). I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realised, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.

other than : ~ 가 아닌

what I (really) was : 나의 본모습

direct (= channel) all my energy into finishing the only work

Had I really succeeded at anything else : really 오히려

my greatest fear : greatest 위대한X => 가장 커다란 (very good, very big)

# You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all -  in which case, you fail by default.

on the scale I did : 내가 (실패)한 만큼

It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless (= it is possible)

might as well  : ~ 하는 게 더 낫다.

by default : 기본값

# Failure gave me an inner security that I had never attained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had suspected; I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above the price of rubies.

no other way = than failure

# The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more than any qualification I ever earned.

The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that : ~를 알게 되면 ~입니다

setback = failure

* secure : 흔들림이 없이 확고한 것

You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until  : 모르지, 그러다가 알게 된다(상황이 바뀐다)

* Such knowledge is : 그걸 알게 되면

* for all = with all = despite : ~에도 불구하고

for all

phrase

C2
For all her qualifications, she's still useless at the job.
For all his many faults, it has to be said he was a good father.
Andrew, for all his academic brilliance, could sometimes make very questionable business decisions.
I still think it was Rachel's decision, for all her complaining about the outcome.
For all her bravado, I could tell she was nervous.
