 in retrospect  = looking back 돌아보니

* an expiry date = an expiration date

take the (steering) wheel : 운전하다(운전대를 잡다)

# So they hoped that I would take a vocational degree; I wanted to study English Literature. A compromise was reached that in retrospect satisfied nobody, and I went up to study Modern Languages. Hardly had my parents’ car rounded the corner at the end of the road than I ditched German and scuttled off down the Classics corridor.

take a vocational degree: 취득 잘 되는 과에 들어가라

* in retrospect  = looking back

* ditch = dump 필요 없어 버리다

* scuttle 종종걸음, 급히

When people or small animals scuttle somewhere, they run there with short quick steps.
Two very small children scuttled away in front of them. [VERB adverb/preposition]
Crabs scuttle along the muddy bank. [VERB adverb/preposition]

# I cannot remember telling my parents that I was studying Classics; they might well have found out for the first time on graduation day. Of all the subjects on this planet, I think they would have been hard(강조) put (= pressed = pushed) to name one less useful than Greek mythology when it came to securing the keys to an executive bathroom.

* might well have found out : well은 강조, 아무도, 분명히, 확실히 알았을 확률이 높다

* they would have been hard put to name one less useful than Greek mythology

Something(anything) less useful than B : ~ 보다 덜 유용한 어떤 것 => B가 최고다

* securing : 확실히 내 손에 넣다

* an executive bathroom : 임원 화장실

* the C-suite : 스위트 룸 (방이 여러 개 있는 것), C는 CEO, CFO, CTO 등 경영진을 의미

#  I would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticise my parents for hoping that I would never experience poverty. They had been poor themselves, and I have since been poor, and I quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience.
Poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. Climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticised only by fools.

a remark that is added to a sentence, often to provide an explanation or extra information, that is separated from the main part of the sentence by commas, brackets, or dashes:
The sentence "Her youngest sister - the one who lives in Australia - is coming over next summer" contains a parenthesis.

in parenthesis
If, while you are talking, you say something in parenthesis, you say it as something extra and then continue with the main part of the sentence:

Of his origins he said very little, merely mentioning in parenthesis that his background was poor.

*  I would like to make it clear : 분명히 해 두고 싶은 게 있습니다.

* blame: 비난하다 => 탓하다

* an expiry date = an expiration date

* steering you in the wrong direction

  steer = 이끌어 주다 = direct = guide

to take someone or something or make someone or something go in the direction in which you want him, her, or it:

She steered her guests into the dining room.
I'd like to steer our discussion back to our original topic.
The main task of the new government will be to steer the country towards democracy.

* take the (steering) wheel : 운전하다(운전대를 잡다)

* What is more = in addition

* ennobling : 존경받는

to make someone a member of the nobility (= highest social rank)

to make something or someone better so that people admire it, him, or her more:
He has this theory that suffering can ennoble a person's character.

* entail = involve 수반한다, 따라온다

*  petty  사소한 = trivial

You can use petty to describe things such as problems, rules, or arguments which you think are unimportant or relate to unimportant things.

[disapproval]

He was miserable all the time and rows would start over petty things.
...endless rules and petty regulations.
The meeting degenerated into petty squabbling.

* by your own efforts = by yourself 혼자 힘으로

If you are by yourself, you are alone.
...a dark-haired man sitting by himself in a corner.
Synonyms: alone, separately, singly, on your own

* something on which to pride yourself

If you pride yourself on a quality or skill that you have, you are very proud of it.
Smith prides himself on being able to organise his own life. [V pron-refl + on]
Doyle prides himself on his accuracy. [V pron-refl on -ing/n]
