전화영어 피드백 모음 #1편 (ft. 운전면허, 영어로?)

* 오늘부터는 전화영어를 진행하면서 강사로부터 피드백을 받은 표현들을 모아 보겠습니다. 

 

* 자주 실수하는 표현이 무엇인지, 스스로 파악하면서 고치는 과정을 통해 제 스스로의 영어실력향상에도 도움이 되겠지만, 저같은 순수 국내파가 자주 하는 실수를 간접적으로 파악할 수 있어 독자들에게도 도움이 될 것이라 확신합니다.

 

그럼 시작해 보겠습니다.

Original:  Actully a couple years ago I like read English books, that was my hobby.
Better:  A couple of years ago, I liked reading English books, which was my hobby.

---

Original: It was not bored and it was not interesting.
Better: I didn't have a boring day but it also wasn't very interesting.

---

Original : I got driving licence about 2 months ago.
Better : I got my drivers licence about 2 months ago.

 

>> 소유격을 명확하게 할 것

 

>> 운전면허증은 영어로 driver's licence 입니다.

I got my driver's license last week. 나, 지난주에 운전면허를 땄어

Original: You'll need to figure out how to balance your life if you work in a position that requires a lot of your time.
Better: With time-demanding positions, you really need to figure out how to balance your life.

 

>> figure out  : to be able to understand something or to solve a problem

We had to figure out the connection between the two events.

figure out how/what/who etc: 

I couldn’t figure out what the teacher was talking about.

Original: Last quarter, the company finally turned the corner after a full year of losses.
Better: After a full year of losing money, the company finally turned the corner last quarter.

Original : my throat was so hurt
Better : my throat was SORE

 

>> hurt : injured, or feeling physical pain

A child could get hurt, climbing that thing.

hurt by/in something: 

Two young men were badly hurt in the accident.

Several people were hurt by flying glass.

>> sore : painful and uncomfortable, usually as a result of an injury, infection, or too much exercise

I always feel stiff and sore after gardening.

Her eyes were sore from studying all night.

a sore throat

Original:  it is stressing me down
Better:  it is MAKING me VERY STRESSFUL

 

>> to be worried or nervous

stress about: 

Even though we’ve got no money I’m not stressing about it.

Better it is a hard question FOR me

---

Original: making lots of joking
Better: making lots of jokes

 

>> you're joking : used for saying that you cannot believe that someone really means what they have just said because it seems so surprising or so silly

‘She’s thirty-five, and she’s going out with a nineteen-year-old.’ ‘You’re joking!’

Original : I can go out tomorrow because the prohibition days have already passed
Better : I can go out tomorrow because my quarantine period has ended

 

>> quarantine : a situation in which a person or animal that might have a disease is kept separate from other people or animals so that they do not catch the disease

in quarantine: 

Animals can be kept in quarantine for up to three months.

Original : I am going to the mountain today for this morning
Better : This morning I am going to the mountains for hike, then I will go to the coffee

>> hike : a long walk in the countryside

We went for a hike through the woods on Sunday.

Original: I am in the HR department
Better: I work in HR, I am charge of all the legal issues and working with the union

Original: In my spare time I like to read some books.
Better: In my spare time I like to read.

---

Original : He was nominate for Nobel prize but he failed
Better : He was nominated for Nobel prize but didn't win.
